3 Things I Wish I Knew When I was 24

Recently, I’ve been making a career shift and this wasn’t part of my original plan for this year. As I was modifying my resume and portfolio, I realized there are things I wish I have done differently when I was young if I had foreseen this.

Firstly, I would have kept a record of all my progress and materials in work. This should include the steps I’ve made, the strategies I’ve tried, and the outcomes of these tasks. I would have kept the notes, the reports and original files, etc. It’s easy to forget the details if you don’t have something concrete for reference. And you don’t know when there’s a situation you wish you can show them again.

Secondly, I’d maintain a comprehensive resume of my experiences. Whenever I apply for a job, I can just duplicate this master resume and remove the irrelevant parts instead of updating the previous version. Always keep the full version with detailed information because you never know when these experiences might become relevant again. If you don’t keep track, you may forget some parts, which could lead to regret.

Lastly, don’t be ashamed of your current skill level or progress, as long as you’re working towards your goal. We have to go through the period of being amateur. We often critique ourselves and think that our current outcomes are not “perfect” and we should hide them from public and wait til we are able to show the world something great. Truth is, most people don’t give a sh*t and you are actually the only criticizer of yourself. Just be comfortable to show what you current have and what you are.

Well, I can’t fix the past. But from now on I’ll record my progress honestly and show it comfortably.
