3 Practice I’ve Been Using to Generate More Writing Ideas

Updated: May 23

I began journaling a few years ago. Over time, I’ve used various tricks during different stages of my creative development. And I’ll share 3 of them in this article.

When I was forming the habit of writing, the first useful method I employed was free writing. I learned about it from some creative writing guidebooks. Free writing is a technique used in creative writing to generate ideas. The idea is to write continuously without regard for spelling, grammar, or topic. It helps to get ideas out of your head and onto paper, especially when you’re feeling stuck or have nothing to write.

As I began to write every day, I noticed improvements in capturing and recording my ideas. I started using voice input more often. Creativity sparks in different situations for different people. While I can certainly write on my computer when I’m at my desk, when I’m outdoors or just relaxing, ideas come to me more spontaneously.

And I also observe the conditions that more naturally generate ideas for me. I’ve noticed that conversations with others often spark more ideas and lead to topics I can dig deeper. Even when I’m alone, I reflect on questions that I could have answered better in past situations. Sometimes, I actively seek out questions to answer, just as I did for this article.

I’ve been fascinated by the mystery of inspiration for a long time. I plan to write more about my experiments and experiences. If this interests you, let me know what you think.
